Mark Dillinger , a surfer from Maui, Hawaii, filters decades of surf knowledge through a quarter century of art making. The resulting works show nuance and subtleties of the coastal landscape most often missed by painters who never enter the water. Working primarily from reference photos captured by the artist or clients, Dillinger informs his work with the vibe of a fully-involved , traveled surf participant. Yet as accurate as his paintings "read", his hand is always evident. He punctuates his work with telling moments seen or recalled - a diving pelican with folded wings: pebbles and salt grass on a desert bluff: a bit of high tide warble on an imploding wave face. When he places a tropical element in a work, it's there for a reason...because he believes in it. More than anything, he makes these paintings with a true love for the ocean environment, to be admired by all.
San Diego cult surf artist Mark Dillinger paints what he knows. That means Baja and South Seas lineups, with an eye tuned for detail and nuance. While his canvases hang in the foyers of many of the surf scene's power brokers, he has recently released a run of digital prints output on canvas with a UV Laminate.
Mark currently lives on Oahu Hawaii, passionately painting and photographing the sea and landscapes
