<ParentEntityID>0</ParentEntityID>

Artist Statement

Perhaps typical of all artists, I believe I am saying something with my work. I know that sounds like the beginning of a deep sensitive personal statement, but what I am actually saying is more universal than personal. I portray the consciousness of my generation. This is not a decision that I have made, but rather a responsibility that I have always willingly and naturally carried.

I use a realistic, yet fantastical style of painting to illustrate the romantic idealism of hope, harmony and balance in a natural universe that has been embraced by my generation. My work captures the essence of a romantic classical ideal of perfection in beauty and thought.

Artist Biography

Bill Ogden was first published in the early 1960's, and has made an indelible impression on the surf art community. Called, "one of the most influential and imitated surf artists of all time," Ogden's work can be seen in magazines, rock posters and various other forms of commercial art.

It was during the 60's and mid 70's when Ogden became known for his original nouveau style of graphics, lettering and figures – a style known as "the Southern California look." Some of his more well-known works during this period include four color illustrations in the L.A. Free Press for Timothy Leary, a series of calendars for the Sound Spectrum in Laguna Beach, and the art for the classic film, The Forgotten Island of Santosha. Also during that time, Ogden's art could be seen every month on the back cover of Surfer Magazine as the main focus of an ad campaign by Jantzen swimwear company.

From the mid 70's to the early 80's, Ogden traveled and painted oils on location in Hawaii, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Peru. In 1980, he published one of the first posters of the "Above and Below Water" concept used by many Hawaiian and Southern Californian artists.

During the 80's, Ogden perfected the "Master Techniques," creating large works on canvas by layering oils. One piece, “The Wizard Merlin," took three years and 30 layers of glaze to complete.

In 1997, Ogden was prominently featured at the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach having designed the festival poster and t-shirt. His art has also been used by companies such as Volcom, Burton and The Triple Crown of Surfing, as well as a twenty design signature series by Quiksilver.

Hide Full Bio

<DisplayOrder>1</DisplayOrder>
<SEName>bill-ogden</SEName> <PageSize>20</PageSize> <SETitle /> <SETitle /> <SEDescription /> <SEKeywords /> <SENoScript /> <TemplateName />
Godfather of Surf Realism / Giclees on Canvas
</Entity> <Entity> <EntityID>20</EntityID> <XmlPackage>entity.vibe.trib.artistpage.xml.config</XmlPackage>
<ColWidth>4</ColWidth> <ParentEntityID>0</ParentEntityID>

Artist Statement

A comic strip is a unique medium, caught somewhere between a written story and a visual piece of art. During the creation of a comic strip, the line between the written story and illustration becomes so blurred that it's almost impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. I don't know what I love more, to create a story or to illustrate it. I guess I love both equally.

By arranging the characters in backgrounds that show perspective and depth, the world of make-believe almost becomes believable. With the use of multiple points of view and extra background details, I've always tried to give my readers something to look at, again and again.

The stories and themes that I portray are satirical commentaries on modern surf culture, where the styles and fads can change at break-neck speeds. The battle between the cool and the un-cool in hard-core surfing is revealed and flipped on its head. Set against the backdrop of perfect waves and smoggy skies, the scenes I depict are not tropical fantasies, they are blends of all the strange and conflicting forces that make up the authentic Southern California surf culture.

Artist Biography

Born and raised in San Diego, California, Bob Penuelas learned to draw at an early age from his father, a technical illustrator. He was heavily influenced by the satirical humor of MAD Magazine in his younger years. Later, in his early teens, Bob learned to surf and soon combined his art with his love for surfing. Rick Griffin, whose artwork regularly appeared in Surfer Magazine, influenced Bob during this time.

Penuelas began his career as a comic strip artist with the creation of the "Maynard and the Rat" strip for Surfer Magazine in 1980. Between 1980 and 1985, he produced 25 two-page episodes for Surfer.

In 1985, while working on a 'Maynard' strip, Bob introduced a dorky character named Wilbur into the strip. The laughable, beginner surfer struck a chord with the surfing public and gained a tremendous positive response from the readers. Wilbur had totally eclipsed the 'Maynard' strip by 1986, and the title was then changed to “Wilbur Kookmeyer.”

Over the years, “Wilbur Kookmeyer” has gained a strong underground following and has become the unofficial mascot for surfers the world over. In 2006, after 20 and 74 episodes, Penuelas decided that it was time for Wilbur to finally paddle into the sunset. Though the comic strip has been retired as a regular feature in Surfer Magazine, the name and legend of Wilbur Kookmeyer will live on among the pantheon of surf legends and heroes.

Bob goes surfing regularly and is still inspired by surfing to create new ideas, new characters and to expand his art into new avenues. "Art is a lot like surfing a wave, looking for that perfect feeling where you're in the zone and all maneuvers seem to come instinctively - not over thinking it, just letting it flow."

Hide Full Bio

<DisplayOrder>1</DisplayOrder>
<SEName>bob-penuelas</SEName> <PageSize>20</PageSize> <SETitle /> <SETitle /> <SEDescription /> <SEKeywords /> <SENoScript /> <TemplateName />
Comic Strip Creator / Wilbur Kookmeyer / Originals
</Entity> <Entity> <EntityID>12</EntityID> <XmlPackage>entity.vibe.trib.artistpage.xml.config</XmlPackage>
<ColWidth>4</ColWidth> <ParentEntityID>0</ParentEntityID>

Artist Statement

All artists search for that perfect place to be completely connected to their environment. For me, that place is Newport Beach in Southern California, where my sailboat/studio sits on the waterfront overlooking the bay. The local people, the sun drenched beaches, romantic coves, dramatic cliffs, pounding surf, tranquil bays and the myriad of yachts, boats, ferries and other watercraft that glide through the bay and past my studio provide my daily inspiration. The glistening spray from waves crashing against the beach, the glow of the cliffs during dramatic sunsets, the color and excitement of people enjoying their leisure time and the reflections of light, the form and color from the surrounding water all illuminate my paintings. It's a rich environment with a wealth of fascinating subjects that allows me to produce work that people simply fall in love with.

Artist Biography

Carole Boller studied at Drisi Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, Illinois. She also received a BA in Fine Art and Art Education from St. Joseph Calumet College, and a Master of Fine Arts Studies from the Art Institute of Chicago.

Carole has painted more than 300 commissioned paintings for hundreds of clients. Most have been portrait paintings, which became memorable and precious pieces of art enjoyed by those families.

Award winning exhibitions featuring Carole's work include the National Arts Club Gallery in New York City, EAA Aviation Museum Tour – Worldwide, and Indianapolis Art Museum Centre in Indiana – a solo exhibit. Locally, her work has been exhibited at the Newport Beach Library, Newport Harbor Nautical Museum and Lido Yacht Club. Two of these exhibitions were solo shows. I'm presenting glimpses of frozen moments and sensations through what I like to think of as an automatic mode of operation. Although much of what I do is obviously very representational work, my mindset is very abstract, process-oriented and primarily based in reacting to things that happen in the act of painting itself. For me, the water world is a given, as I've spent a huge part of my life in the ocean. I've just always been very comfortable in that environment, so the movements flow very freely. Also, the liquidity of the subject matter simply lends itself to further exploration and development of what I have sometimes lightheartedly referred to as my handwriting to the tenth power. I enjoy visceral and emotionally charged artwork that reads instantly in an overall sense, and then offers new discoveries upon further investigation. I'm fascinated with the formal academics of drawing and painting, and have always been enchanted by little details in nature, such as watching how the wind blows through the leaves or how the water and light dance in the shore break. In addition to having a deep relationship with the universe of lifelike characters, the ocean has presented me with a lifetime of surfing at all levels, from playful to life-threatening. So, to be able to explore it all and discover new realities through not just painting, but painting in an abstract mindset, is very satisfying for me. These sorts of things have intrigued people for ages, and I see this work as merely my contribution to the human picture.

Artist Biography

Chris Lundy was born and raised on the Gulf Coast of Florida, immersed in the creative culture of his hometown, Sarasota, and surrounded by actors and artists since childhood. This set the tone early on, and Chris recalls being an art kid for as long as he can remember, dividing the rest of his time between surfing and music. Not long after graduating high school, he made his way to the North Shore of Oahu with a backpack and surfboard, where he continued to paint. It was here that be became deeply immersed in building surfboards and eventually became a two-time invite to The Pipeline Masters. Lundy was among a group of dedicated, pacesetting surfers the media labeled, “The Pipeline Underground.” Both pros and North Shore regulars sought after his sleek, refined boards for big Hawaiian surf. In the spring of 1983, he was the first surfer to take the newly unveiled tri-fin 'Thruster,' introduced by Australian Simon Anderson the previous year, into surf over 20 feet at Waimea Bay.

A serious knee injury in the '83 Pipe Masters took Lundy out of the water, and he spent the next several years in L.A. earning a BFA from Art Center College of Design. He returned to the North Shore in 1990 to begin producing a string of international event posters for which he became well known. These included pieces he designed and painted for the Hawaii Triple Crown of Surfing, The Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, The Oxbow World Longboard Championship and Niki's Honolulu Marathon poster on the international stage in Japan and Indonesia. He's been commissioned to produce large mixed media work for MTV and has been involved in an array of 'special projects' at NIKE for years.

In recent years, Lundy has been focused on his own painting, especially large canvases that have been the subject of features in The Surfer's Journal, Juxtapoz Art and Culture Magazine and Sole Collector Magazine. As a third generation San Diegan, he took to all manner of water sports at an early age, but settled with surfing in the early seventies. But it was drawing that held his attention most of all. As early as he can recall, he was scribbling on any scrap of paper he could commandeer. All manner of sketches adorned his homework assignments throughout his school years. In college, he found architecture a fitting outlet for his passion to draw, which lead Norm to a career designing houses in the greater San Diego area. Then, in 1989, Norm moved his family to the High Sierra near the town of Hume Lake where he took a position as Graphic Designer and Architect for Hume Lake Christian Camps.

Hume was a wonderful place to raise his young family, but there was seldom surf on the Lake, so Norm took up sailing as a consolation. In early 1990, while designing commercial graphics, Norm found inspiration in the illustrations of Dean Cornwell and thought he would try oil painting. Norm then studied oil painting taught by the master "plein air" artist, Ken Auster. With a few rules of application and a life of design composition behind him, Norm proceeded to paint as much and as often as possible. Though mostly self-taught, Norm is keenly aware of the inspiration he found in the classes with Ken Auster and his relentless study of other impressionist artists. Norm says sometimes the paint just seems to flow out of his soul and onto the canvas, which is reflected in his composition of incredible bold brush strokes and dramatic color pallets.

Now in San Diego, Norm is finding opportunities to paint and exhibit his works in wonderful venues such as McKibben Studios in Corona Del Mar, California where he is showing Surf & Island themed paintings and a few "plein air" pieces of San Diego county landmarks and nautical pieces. Yet, as an artist and photographer, his eye conveys to the rest of us a world only Carter was once able to see. Born and raised in southern California, Carter's passion was discovered in the first wave he rode – opening his mind to infinite possibilities. In 1986, he purchased his first camera and water-housing unit, not knowing this would impact his life forever.

Carter became a cinematographer and traveled around the Pacific in pursuit of the perfect wave. In 1990, armed with years of footage, he moved to San Francisco and refined his skills as an editor. In 1992, Scott produced the classic bodyboarding movie, Enough Said. It tipped the bodyboarding world on its ear. He also produced The Inside in 1996. Both have become two of the greatest cult-videos in the genre. Carter has worked as director of photography for the first MTV Sports Show and as photographer/creative director for STOMP.

As the digital age advanced, Carter found the synergy between a camera lens and a computer screen. Honing his editing skills as a filmmaker, he enhanced his palette through conceptualization and imagination. Focusing on high-speed 16mm cinematography as well as digital imagery, he wanted to make a serious impact on the wave riding industry. The opportunity arose when Carter was tapped to direct Fire, a documentary about 11x World Champion bodyboarder Mike Stewart. Carter became the creative force behind the project and delivered a film unlike any other. Seven years in the making, Fire won the 2005 Cinema Paradise Art Film Festival Award in Honolulu. The success of Fire is a milestone to Carter's projects finding a mainstream audience.

Carter's unique perspective shines in Liquid Flux, a beautiful book that illustrates years of collecting images, thoughts and graphic depictions of the ocean's many moods. Scott Carter's photography has been published on the covers of Surfers Journal, Surfing Magazine, Riptide and North East Magazine. “Art is in the eye of the beholder,” Carter says, “sometimes you can make a masterpiece without knowing it, and many times you can make something out of nothing, and that's the magic.”

Hide Full Bio

<DisplayOrder>1</DisplayOrder>
<SEName>scott-carter</SEName> <PageSize>20</PageSize> <SETitle /> <SETitle /> <SEDescription /> <SEKeywords /> <SENoScript /> <TemplateName />
Photographer, Miniature Waves / Giclees on Canvas
</Entity> <Entity> <EntityID>25</EntityID> <XmlPackage>entity.vibe.trib.artistpage.xml.config</XmlPackage>
<ColWidth>4</ColWidth> <ParentEntityID>0</ParentEntityID>

Artist Statement

My nature is to be humble and unassuming; I take little credit for my visual arts achievements. He realized shortly thereafter that designing and creating a great piece of art is only the first of many steps that need to happen in order to present that piece to the marketplace.

In 1975, he started McKibben Screen Printing & Display Inc. to improve quality control standards. He started the company to produce limited edition fine art serigraph prints, wall murals and visual communication graphic merchandise on various medias, which included point of purchase displays, decals, banners and t-shirts. Having 200 employees, 17 state of the art presses, a 50,000 square feet building and more than three decades of expertise has made Mr. Mckibben's commitment to details and quality standards possible. An artist may communicate information, simple or profound, across time and space to the viewer, regardless of his or her background. My desire is to be simple in my work and connect with the viewer in a way that brings back memories. I place emphasis on color, which provides a myriad of emotions. I desire to capture moments that we relate to and want to relate to. My intention is to have the viewer connect with my art on a personal level.

Artist Biography

As a native Californian, Tony Spineto believes much of his stylistic uniqueness as an artist germinated during his sojourns to the beach. Although his artistic pathway includes study at the Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna Beach, he considers his independent acquisition of understanding art through his exploration of the masters as a major influence on his continual growth as an artist.

Inspired by surfing, in color, form and content, Tony focuses on creating works of art that capture the essence of the freedom and flow of the sea. Through a kaleidoscope of brilliant colors, his honest, pure style of meandering dry brush strokes mixed with a unique perspective of natural objective form brings new meaning to his subject matter.

Not limited to traditional topics that define the essence of surfing, Tony includes works that illustrate complementary surfing scenes that illustrate calm reflections brought to life through his desire to creatively meld illusions of the open, uncomplicated views of the life of a surfer. Tony Spineto is genuinely conscious of the fact that he creates works of art that can only minutely express man's ongoing desire to ride the waves.

Hide Full Bio

<DisplayOrder>1</DisplayOrder>
<SEName>tony-spineto</SEName> <PageSize>20</PageSize> <SETitle /> <SETitle /> <SEDescription /> <SEKeywords /> <SENoScript /> <TemplateName />
Impressionist / Original Oils and Giclees on Canvas
</Entity> </Manufacturer> <Library /> <Distributor> <Entity> <EntityID>1</EntityID> <XmlPackage>entity.artistpage.xml.config</XmlPackage>
<ColWidth>4</ColWidth> <ParentEntityID>0</ParentEntityID>
<DisplayOrder>1</DisplayOrder>
<SEName>mckibben-studios</SEName> <PageSize>20</PageSize> <SETitle /> <SETitle /> <SEDescription /> <SEKeywords /> <SENoScript /> <TemplateName />
</Entity> </Distributor> <Genre /> <Vector /> </EntityHelpers> </root>
